RESEARCH OVERVIEW.....
The research laboratory of Dr. Peter Light studies ion transport processes controlling cellular excitability. We utilize a combination of electrophysiological, biochemical and molecular techniques to study the physiology and pharmacology of ion channels and exchangers at the molecular, cellular, organ and whole organism levels.

Currently, we are studying the following:
1. The ionic and metabolic events that lead to
cellular dysfunction in the heart
and endocrine pancreas
2. Common gene variants in ion channels and susceptibility to
type 2 diabetes.
3. Ion transport pharmacology and pharmacogenomics
4. Molecular engineering of islets to improve post-transplant function and survival
